Welcome to our June issue of HR News! This month, we decided to focus on mental well-being and workplace safety. These two topics go hand-in-hand, helping to make the workplace better for all employees and securing not only employee engagement, but employee commitment to the organization.
Employers find themselves at a critical moment, as the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to rising rates of mental health challenges for employees. Recent studies have shown that public sector employees, in particular, are struggling with burnout and their overall mental well-being. Mission Square Research Institute studies in May 2021 and March 2022 on the impact of COVID-19 on public sector employees found rising rates of anxiety and stress, as well as significant rates of respondents reporting burnout.
Mental illnesses pose difficulties for workers because their symptoms can interfere with essential workplace skills such as participating effectively in teams, interacting with customers and coworkers, and maintaining concentration.
I am so proud of public sector human resources professionals who continue to implement policies to help their agency’s employees. As the role of mental health is taking on a new importance in the workplace, HR professionals can drive solutions and, more importantly, the public sector can lead our nation with best practices in the workplace. Take a look at a recent webinar IPMA-HR did on the topic. We also have a dedicated resource page on mental health in the workplace on our website.
Please also take time to take care of yourself!
On another note, June is Global Volunteer Month. That makes now a great time to consider getting more involved with your Association. There are so many volunteer opportunities at IPMA-HR throughout the year, and your input, vision and collaboration will help IPMA-HR succeed. A few opportunities to consider follow.
Applications are being accepted through June 17, 2022, for two Executive Council positions. One position is for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2023, and ending Dec. 31, 2025. There is also one current vacancy with a term that expires Dec. 31, 2023. The Nominating Committee is seeking a diverse group of applicants and will develop a candidate slate that will be voted upon by the Executive Council.
Every year, IPMA-HR recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of its members and the work they do on behalf of their agencies. Please consider submitting an award application nominating yourself, a colleague or your agency. Awards nominations are open through July 15, 2022. Award winners will be recognized and celebrated at the IPMA-HR Annual Conference 2022 in Washington, D.C.
This year’s conference is shaping up to be better than ever! I am so excited about our three keynote speakers, who will talk to you about building remarkable teams; creating a culture of mentorship to attract, develop and retain great employees; and spark your imagination and ingenuity. In addition, our Conference Committee is currently reviewing an overwhelming number of proposals that came in from potential speakers to help create a rewarding and inspiring educational experience for you.
We also have three preconference workshops that you don’t want to miss. See the Annual Conference web page for more details. Early bird registration expires soon, so take a look and register!
We are so excited to be back in person with you Sept. 28-30, 2022!
Summer is here. I hope you will stay safe and have fun!
