Looking for some ideas on how to celebrate Public Service Recognition Week this year? Check out this collection of resources and examples of what other agencies are doing to mark the occasion.
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) wants to make sure its 2,700 public servants know they are valued and appreciated.
“Throughout the year, my team and I send short appreciation emails to each employee in our department on their anniversary date,” Lareina C. Camacho, planner in CNMI’s department of finance, recently told PSHRA.
With Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) just around the corner (May 5 – 11), CNMI has much more than emails in store to honor its employees.
For example, CNMI Gov. Arnold Palacios will kickstart the celebration on May 1, signing a proclamation designating May 5 – 11 as Public Service Recognition Week throughout the U.S. territory. During Public Service Recognition Week, CNMI will also host a weeklong government softball tournament including 14 teams from various government agencies, said Camacho, noting that teams’ $100 entrance fee will go toward field fees as well as cash prizes.
The week will also feature award ceremonies at various government agencies, Camacho added, where CNMI government workers will receive accolades for their years of service and departments will name their employee of the year, for instance.
The City of Henderson, Nev., is eager to celebrate Public Service Recognition Week with the City’s nearly 3,500 employees and their families, Mimi Merhi, Henderson’s HR programs coordinator, told PSHRA.
For example, the City is organizing an employee and family “Spring Fling” appreciation event, boasting food trucks, activities and game booths geared toward employees’ kids.
“We recognize that our [employees] work very hard to provide essential services necessary for the functioning of our community,” said Merhi. “Holding a celebration such as this one, during Public Service Recognition Week, is one way we show gratitude for their hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence. Without them, we would not be the premier community that we are.”
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) plans to incorporate food into its celebration as well.
In an April 18 letter expressing gratitude to the agency’s employees, for instance, MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams invited workers to attend one of two baked potato bar recognition lunch events held during PSRW.
Public Service Recognition Week “is a fantastic opportunity to honor and appreciate the dedicated individuals who serve their communities through public service,” Heather Dery, employee engagement analyst at MGCB, told PSHRA.
“Recognizing our nearly 200 employees during PSRW fosters a sense of pride and morale within our agency, and demonstrates that our contributions to ensuring the integrity and fairness of gaming activities in the state are valued and appreciated.”
