California Launches Tool Designed to Help Match Job Seekers with State Roles
California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently announced the launch of a new GenAI-assisted tool on CalCareers, designed to make it easier for job seekers to explore a variety of careers in California state government.
In an Oct. 19 statement detailing the new resource, Newsom’s office said the state of California is “taking the search out of finding a state job, and connecting people directly to roles that are right for them.”
Intended to automatically match Californians’ skills and experience in an uploaded resume to available state roles, the tool was born out of a partnership between the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) and the state’s Office of Data and Innovation (ODI).
According to Newsom’s office, the Skills Matching prototype uses the same technology as the AskCA prototype, a new AI-powered tool meant to help Californians “better connect with state services through a streamlined model designed around life events like finding a job, starting a business or recovering from a disaster.”
The tool uses secure, automated resume analysis to suggest state job classifications that line up with applicants’ skill and experience, the statement read, noting that the resource works by allowing job seekers to upload a resume and receive matching state roles.
“There’s no reason this process should be this onerous, especially when we have the tools and technology to make accessing state jobs easier,” said Newsom, in a statement.
“By reducing barriers to employment, we are building a stronger workforce and helping talented and qualified individuals enter California’s state service.”
