A new survey finds more than half of Gen Z workers saying they plan to look for a new job by the end of 2026, with a similar number believing that changing employers could be the path to improving their earning potential.
Consulting firm Robert Half recently polled more than 440 Gen Z-age professionals (born between 1997 and 2012). More than half (55%) said they plan to look for new employment by year’s end, compared to 32% who said the same in a similar Robert Half survey in 2025.
Salary is “a major factor behind the shift,” according to a Robert Half statement, as more than half (53%) said they believe that switching jobs could offer greater earning potential.
Gen Z workers seem to also be motivated by the possibility of better perks and benefits, career advancement opportunities and greater workplace flexibility, according to Robert Half.
In terms of the perks and benefits that Gen Z emphasize the most when evaluating would-be employers, the largest number (65%) said they consider health insurance. Another 60% said the same about more flexible work schedules. Fifty-seven percent said they take commuter benefits into consideration, followed by 401(k) savings plans (53%), dental insurance (52%) and free or subsidized meals (52%).
“Younger professionals are taking a proactive approach to their careers, and for many that includes exploring new roles that offer stronger earning potential, advancement opportunities and flexibility,” said Dawn Fay, operational president of Robert Half, in a statement.
“Employers should be clear about growth paths, compensation, and the support available to help retain workers and encourage them to build their skills.”
