New York Launches Recruitment Initiative Aimed at Displaced Federal Talent

Roughly 30,000 federal employees have lost their jobs since the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was formed in January. And that number is increasing on an almost daily basis.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has a message for public sector talent displaced by DOGE.

“The federal government might say, ‘You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say, ‘You’re hired.’ In fact, we love federal workers,” said Gov. Hochul, in a video announcing the Empire State’s new “You’re Hired” recruitment campaign. “Whatever your skills, we value public service.”

As amNewYork reported, Gov. Hochul introduced the new initiative on Feb. 25, in an effort to promote New York state government as a landing spot for the thousands of federal employees who have been let go as part of mass federal firings in recent weeks.

The state has also launched a website that directs visitors to StateJobsNY, the online portal where candidates can search and apply for New York state government roles. According to amNewYork, the site has already received more than 1,900 entries for New York state government vacancies listed in the portal.

“Public service is a noble calling, and we’re looking for the best and brightest to come work for New York State,” said Timothy R. Hogues, New York State Department of Civil Service Commissioner and Civil Service Commission President, said in a press release from Gov. Hochul’s office.

“By coming to work for the Empire State, you’ll have the opportunity to help your neighbors, community and state in a variety of ways — serving, protecting, and caring for your fellow New Yorkers and our wonderful resources in solid, stable jobs.”

In that same statement, New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon urged federal employees looking for new opportunities to consider public sector career options at the state level.

“Careers in public service offer stability, competitive pay, great benefits and a chance to make a difference in the lives of your fellow New Yorkers,” Reardon said. “I encourage all former federal workers with a continued interest in public service to check out the many careers in New York State government today.”
