Kansas City to Expedite Job Applications for Federal Workers

Close to 30,000 federal workers call Kansas City home.

As reported by KCUR, the City Council of Kansas City is taking measures to help the metro area’s federal employees who may be affected by mass federal firings and layoffs, recently passing a resolution that will expedite job applications received by federal workers.

The city will add a box for federal workers to check on its standard job application, so they go directly to hiring managers. According to KCUR, the resolution’s sponsor, Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw recently noted that 17% of the city’s 4,000 positions are currently unfilled, and said that helping fired federal employees find their next opportunity would be a boon to the city and the local economy.

“The long-term impact of having unemployed people will have a negative impact on our city,” Parks-Shaw said at a recent committee hearing.

As KCUR pointed out, several federal agencies have a significant presence in the Kansas City area, including the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids recently convened a roundtable discussion with a group including former employees at the EPA and IRS, each of whom have recently lost their jobs at the hands of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency.

In addition to distributing a Job Seekers Guide that included resources for finding new employment, Davids spoke with these workers about the personal and community impact of recent events in federal government.

“The mass layoffs pushed by the current administration and DOGE are not just uprooting the lives of dedicated federal workers, they are putting at risk the essential services our communities rely on every day,” said Davids, in a statement.

“In Kansas, where federal jobs are a vital part of our economy, these cuts threaten not only public trust but public safety. While I support efforts to make government more efficient, this reckless approach will have far-reaching consequences. I am committed to standing up against these harmful cuts, holding those responsible accountable, and ensuring that these workers and the services they provide are protected.”
