In an effort to help employers promote inclusive hiring as the use of AI-powered recruitment tools increases, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has introduced the AI & Inclusive Hiring Framework.
Published by the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), the framework is based on the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework, and includes NIST’s best practices for inclusive hiring, according to a DOL statement announcing the new tool.
Funded by PEAT’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, the framework “will help employers reduce the risks of creating unintentional forms of discrimination and barriers to accessibility as they implement AI hiring technology,” according to DOL, which notes that the initiative also figures to help workers and job seekers navigate the potential benefits and challenges they could face as they encounter AI-enabled technologies.
Developed with input from disability advocates, government and industry leaders, AI authorities and a national online public dialogue, the AI & Inclusive Hiring Framework consists of 10 focus areas, including practices, goals and sample activities that employers can adopt in their AI governance and disability-inclusive hiring initiatives, according to DOL. Each of these 10 areas contains information on maximizing benefits for talent and job seekers while managing their risks related to AI when organizations assess, acquire or deploy AI hiring technologies.
“The Office of Disability Employment Policy works with many employers eager to hire people with disabilities and benefit from their talents,” said Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy Taryn Williams, in a statement.
“These employers recognize that AI tools can improve recruitment and hiring but may also impact workplace culture and inclusion of disabled employees. The AI & Inclusive Hiring Framework … charts a clear course for employers to navigate this transformation successfully.”
