Work for America’s (WFA) free Civic Match hiring platform was rolled out in late 2024, just weeks before the Trump administration took over the White House in January 2025. And just weeks before his administration began making cuts to the federal workforce that would wind up numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

Created to help job seekers with federal experience find opportunities within state and local government organizations, the Civic Match platform has gone on to support more than 14,000 seasoned public sector professionals affected by federal workforce cuts.

Thus far, more than 500 Civic Match job seekers have found new positions in state and local government across 42 states and Washington, D.C., according to Work for America.

Previously available only to those impacted by federal workforce reductions, WFA is expanding Civic Match. The platform is now open to any job seeker seeking state and local government career opportunities, regardless of whether or not they possess any government experience.

“As private-sector layoffs across industries continue to surge, careers in state and local government, which have not eliminated positions due to emerging technology such as AI, continue to be some of the most stable and resilient career paths,” according to a Sept. 16 WFA statement announcing the expansion.

Noting that the number of tech-sector layoffs for 2026 have already surpassed 2025 levels, WFA added that Civic Match job postings have grown consistently over time, with roughly 420 new roles posted per month since early 2025.

According to WFA, nearly a quarter of the jobs posted to Civic Match since its launch have called for skills typically found in industries that have been susceptible to layoffs, such as data and analytics, cybersecurity, user experience and design-related roles, information technology and AI, for instance.

More than one-third of Civic Match job seekers who have landed state or local government roles reported having one or more of these tech-related skills, the organization said.

“Some of the most creative, entrepreneurial work in the country is happening inside city and state governments, building the tools millions of people rely on every day,” said Caitlin Lewis, Work for America executive director, in a statement.

“There has never been a shared front door to find those jobs. Now there is, and it’s open to anyone who wants to serve.”
