In March, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order directing the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) to streamline the hiring process for displaced federal workers seeking employment with the state of California.

In response, CalHR is launching a new campaign designed to help current or former federal workers apply for California government roles, including a new website, where would-be applicants can learn more about job opportunities with the state.

The W4CA federal workers webpage “provides resources to simplify the state application process and connects the federal workforce with rewarding careers within state service,” according to a CalHR statement announcing the new site.

The site provides federal workers with access to:

  • Application resources, including downloadable checklists about preparing for interviews
  • An FAQ targeted at federal workers looking to start state service
  • Examples of state positions that may have federal equivalency
  • Positions in fields such as firefighting, the sciences, medical and mental health and more
  • The Work4CA “How to Get a State Job” Series
  • Application tips directly from recruiters
  • The California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) career center, a resource to connect with recruiters for virtual or in-person career guidance
  • Information on additional opportunities available for veterans and persons with disabilities
  • A summary of benefits provided by the State of California

“California values the skillset and experience federal workers bring to public service – and we want them to know that there is a place for them here in the Golden State,” Newsom said in a statement. “Recruiting these experienced professionals to fill key job openings in a variety of fields can help us now and into the future.”
