The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently rolled out an open data portal at data.dol.gov, which the department says will make accessing data related to the American workforce easier and more transparent.
According to a DOL statement announcing the launch, the portal helps bring the department into alignment with the OPEN Government Data Act of 2019 and the Federal Data Strategy established by the Trump administration.
The department says the new portal will include a “wider variety of data from many agencies,” including:
- National weekly unemployment insurance claims data from the Employment and Training Administration
- Federal contractor veteran employment data from the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service
- County-level data on childcare prices from the Women’s Bureau
The portal also includes a data visualization gallery and a modern Application Programming Interface, according to DOL, which says the interface will enable data users and developers to access data through customized requests. In the coming year, the department plans to enhance the portal’s search capability, expand data sets, ensure AI integration and add further tools “to help users interact with the data.”
In a statement, U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer called the new data portal “a significant improvement” that features improved integration with other federal data sources and enhanced AI compatibility for finding, visualizing and using labor data.
“This is a win for everyone,” said Chavez-DeRemer, “from data scientists and researchers to the general public who want to understand our department’s work and enforcement actions. The new portal is a realization of our vision for truly open data at the department.”
