As human resources manager with the Village of Alsip, Ill., Anthony Fasano feels he has a responsibility to deliver “quality employees” that can meet the community’s evolving needs.

The opportunity to find and develop that kind of civic-minded talent is one key reason why Fasano, who holds a master’s degree in human resources, wanted to get into government HR.

Fasano’s human resources career began in more corporate environments, holding HR positions with UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Securatex, Bimbo Bakeries and Power Distributing, before moving into public service.

“My first public sector role was actually in education,” says Fasano, who also holds a master’s degree in special education. “I was a special education teacher at the Chicago Public Schools. It was here the seed was planted to continue serving in the public sector, back where my passion lies, in HR.”

Coming on board with the Village of Alsip in August 2022, Fasano says that his time in public service offers a special type of professional satisfaction.

“Working in the public sector gives me a sense of fulfillment, knowing my work contributes to fairness, equity and effective public service.”

Fasano joined PSHRA as a member in July 2023, in hopes of finding the type of resources that could help him better serve the public.

“PSHRA delivers a plethora of tools that foster engagement in the profession,” he says. “PSHRA has allowed me to connect with like-minded public sector HR professionals, along with [taking advantage of] opportunities to network and showcase my skills by participating in various committees and events.”

Looking ahead, Fasano’s plan to continue building these professional relationships includes capitalizing on PSHRA’s professional development activities and networking events as the HR profession continues to evolve.

Fasano, who served on PSHRA’s publications committee in 2024, cites the connections he’s already made with peers and mentors among his fellow members as a key benefit of his membership.

“Whether its learning best practices, staying current on emerging trends or simply having a network to exchange ideas with, PSHRA has helped me grow professionally and personally. Ultimately, interacting with my PSHRA colleagues has motivated me to become a better person, subsequently fine-tuning my HR leadership skills.”
